Una biblioteca in tempo di guerra: la Berio dal 1935 al 1947

Utilizzando fonti d’archivio, l’articolo ricostruisce le vicende della Biblioteca Berio, la principale biblioteca civica genovese, che durante la seconda guerra mondiale subì un grave incendio con la distruzione di due terzi del suo patrimonio. Si sofferma sull’attività di prevenzione antiaerea del patrimonio bibliografico del Comune di Genova, iniziata nel 1935, e in particolare sul trasferimento del materiale librario di maggior pregio della Berio e delle altre civiche, prima nei ricoveri in Val Bisagno, poi nel basso Piemonte in Val di Lemme, a Gavi, Carrosio e Voltaggio. Attraverso l’esame dei documenti d’archivio, in parte in contraddizione tra loro, è proposta una ricostruzione degli eventi che nel novembre del 1942 portarono alla distruzione di due terzi del patrimonio librario della biblioteca. Sono descritti i tentativi di ripresa dell’attività della biblioteca e di ricostituzione del patrimonio librario, avviati quando la guerra non era ancora finita e proseguiti nell’immediato dopoguerra con il rientro dei libri dai rifugi e il progetto di una nuova sede insieme con la Biblioteca Universitaria nel palazzo di Pammatone. Il progetto fu poi abbandonato, ma, tuttavia, condizionò fortemente il futuro della Berio

Drawing on archival sources, this article reconstructs the history of the Berio Library, Genoa’s principal civic library, which during the Second World War suffered a devastating fire that destroyed two-thirds of its collections. It focuses on the anti-aircraft prevention efforts for the bibliographic heritage of the Municipality of Genoa, which began in 1935, and specifically on the transfer of the most valuable books from the Berio Library and other civic libraries, first to shelters in the Bisagno Valley, and then to the lower Piedmont region, in Gavi, Carrosio, and Voltaggio. Through an analysis of archival documents – some of which are partially contradictory – the article proposes a reconstruction of the events of November 1942, when a devastating fire destroyed two-thirds of the library’s collections. Finally, it describes the efforts to resume the library’s activities and reconstitute the book collections, which began before the war was over and continued in the immediate post-war period with the return of the books from shelters and the project for a new joint headquarters with the University Library in the Pammatone Palace. The project was later abandoned, but it nonetheless strongly conditioned the future of the Berio Library.
