Il Palazzetto criminale di Genova: dalle origini nel Medioevo agli inizi dell’Ottocento
|
|
Il contributo propone una disamina delle vicende costruttive inerenti il cosiddetto Palazzetto criminale della Repubblica di Genova, a partire dalle sue origini nel Medioevo come casa dei Doria – sicuramente adibita dalla metà circa del XIV secolo a sede provvisoria del podestà – fino alla perdita delle sue funzioni residenziali, giudiziarie e carcerarie agli inizi dell’Ottocento, quando il palazzo divenne sede degli Archivi del Regno sabaudo. Il momento cruciale di tale vicenda si colloca alla fine del XVI secolo, quando il palazzo venne ingrandito ampliandosi sulle adiacenti proprietà dei Canonici di San Lorenzo e assunse la conformazione che ancora oggi riconosciamo. Un’attenta disamina delle fonti già note e ulteriori ricerche d’archivio hanno consentito numerose precisazioni e alcune piccole scoperte, confermate anche dalle indagini condotte sull’edificio in vista del suo recupero, a cui si fa sinteticamente cenno.

The essay proposes an examination of the construction history of the so-called Palazzetto criminale of the Republic of Genoa, starting from its origins in the Middle Ages as the house of the Doria family – certainly used from around the middle of the 14th century as the temporary seat of the Podestà – up to the loss of its residential, judicial and prison functions at the beginning of the 19th century, when the palazzo became the seat of the Archives of the Kingdom of Savoy. The pivotal moment in this affair occurred at the end of the 16th century, when the palace was enlarged by expanding on the adjacent property of the Canons of San Lorenzo and took on the conformation that we still recognise today. Careful scrutiny of the sources already known and further archive research have enabled numerous clarifications and some minor discoveries, which have also been confirmed by the investigations conducted on the building with a view to its recovery, which are briefly mentioned here.
